The Transport Secretary recently reaffirmed the Government's commitment to HS2, to tackle the looming capacity crisis the rail network faces.
HS2 is supported by all the major conurbations that it will service, as they believe it will provide a number of benefits to their areas. It should provide the capacity required to future-proof rail travel from the North into London, trebling the number of seats into London Euston in the peak, with up to 18 trains an hour running in each direction. Indeed, some estimates suggest that for every £1 invested in the project, the UK economy will receive over £2.50 in benefits and the construction alone will create around 25,000 jobs and 2,000 apprenticeships.
